Giving Back

We love our life and feel very grateful for everything we are blessed with such as each other, good health, a warm home and fresh foods.

It is important to us to gladly give a little more than we take in this world. Our wish is to support 1 local charity (close to us here in Devon, UK), and 1 global charity.

We love children and nature and have chosen to support 2 charities to reflect this. They are:

  • Devon Wildlife Trust (DWT)
  • Himalayan Learning (HL)

Initially 2% of the profit of thehappygelateria.com will be divided between DWT and Himalayan Learning. We definitely see this percentage increasing as we grow - and we thank you for your help in this.

About DWT

Established as a registered charity in 1962, the Devon Wildlife Trust has a unique and influential position. Unique because it is the only organisation concerned with all aspects of wildlife conservation in Devon. Influential because it is a member of The Wildlife Trusts partnership, a British nationwide network dedicated to the achievement of a UK richer in wildlife.

Within the Wildlife Trusts Partnership there are more than a quarter of a million members that help care for over 2,000 nature reserves. DWT works closely with many other organisations, including neighbouring Cornwall Wildlife Trust, Dorset Wildlife Trust, and Somerset Wildlife Trust.

Around 60 full-time staff, mainly based at Cricklepit Mill in Exeter, work in a range of areas to achieve our common aim for wildlife.

With nature reserves throughout the county, DWT is closely involved in land and marine management, surveying, policy formulation and education. DWT employs highly qualified staff trained in all aspects of wildlife conservation. Hundreds of people, members and others, work on a voluntary basis; organising walks and talks, local conservation projects, monitoring local wildlife and raising funds.

DWT also has a dedicated children’s ‘Wildlife Watch’ section that provides education for children and actively encourages them to get involved with wildlife observation and conservation through publication of a magazine, games,  provision of talks and walks and volunteering opportunities and suggestions for activities that children can undertake on their own or with their families and friends.

About Himalayan Learning

Himalayan Learning is a small charity working in Nepal that prides itself on using its grassroots background to deliver cheap and effective development.

Himalayan Learning's aims are:

  • To enable access to education
  • To empower local communities
  • To build sustainable livelihoods
  • To emphasise rights
  • To provide life and security

Thehappygelateria aims to support HL through sponsoring as many children as possible, and support of the Shanti school renovation project as follows:

What Himalayan Learning are doing

Shanti School Renovation

Shanti Srijana School is one of most undeveloped schools that Himalayan Learning support and we are working with the local community to improve it.

Shanti Srijana school currently has no windows, no doors, no desks, no toilets, and no water supply
Every school year about 200 children start the term but, after one term, only half remain. Whilst the school has 5 class rooms, there are only 2 teachers and only 1 is paid.

HL want to turn the school around and have worked with the local community to develop a plan. Using their manpower HL will supply materials and management to improve the school, including building toilets, bringing in a water supply and setting up a water tank.

HL will also renovate the building and make the classrooms nice to study in so that children stay in school. To do this, will require a budget of £1,200. As soon as HL raise the funding they will start working towards making the children's lives' better.

HL Nepal Film

HL have produced a short Himalayan film featuring Nepal documentary footage on the struggles of children in the Himalaya and how we help them with your support.

Sponsor a child

Sponsor a child with Himalayan Learning and help some of the most vulnerable children in the world escape the effects of extreme poverty.

For just £20 a year one child and their community can be helped to get the education they need to survive in terrible conditions.

Himalayan Learning will use that £20 for school fees, stationary, and books, and for clothing and uniform. They will also create a training and health fund for that child's future, and provide for their community.

In return, HL will provide us with information, photos, and updates of our sponsored children.
